3 Super-Effective At-Home Workout Programs + tips for staying motivated

Think you don’t have the motivation to workout at home? Wondering if you can get the same fitness results at-home that you can at the gym? I used to think those same things until it became my only option to fit in a consistent workout routine. Read on to find out why I have fallen in love with working out at home + my top 3 recommendations for the best at-home workout programs that are motivating, effective, and fun!

Working out at home has become a solid option for many people – including myself. In fact, most of my workouts over the past year have been done right in my basement! After taking on a full time work load + the kids crazy after school activities schedules, I was seriously struggling to get to the gym as much as I wanted and I started to notice the effects! However – going to my beloved gym 4 + days a week was so deeply rooted in who I was that I thought there was no other way to get my workout in. I also thought seeking out other options meant failing. But the fact was, my schedule had changed and I needed to figure it out! So I started looking into at-home workout options and discovered a whole other fitness world I didn’t know existed!

The at-home fitness community was strong, effective, and alive!! So I went for it. I placed my coveted Lifetime Fitness membership on hold and set myself up in the basement!

Somewhere between my own written workouts, streaming fitness programs via Beachbody on Demand, and following a few of my favorite fitness blogger’s ideas and programs, I actually began enjoying the simplicity of working out right at-home. Not to mention I have seen the same results I was from going to the gym. I can’t say I do not miss the gym (I still consider it one of my happy places) – but I can tell you that at-home fitness is pretty amazing too! So, if you find yourself looking into this route – trust me – you won’t be disappointed. There are limitless options and a pretty fun community!

How To Stay Motivated To Workout At-Home

Consistency IS the key when it comes to physical fitness, whether you are at the gym or at home. Think of it like brushing your teeth. You don’t just brush your teeth a couple of times and then go days or weeks without brushing them again. You brush everyday to maintain healthy teeth. Your body works the same way – you need to work on it everyday! So how do you stay motivated when its just you and a pair of dumbbells. Here are my top tips for staying motivated at home.

  • Find a fitness program you love and schedule your workouts – Have a plan! Do not try winging it. A workout calendar works the best for me. Write your workouts down on the calendar and make them a non-negotiable in your day. NO EXCUSES – just do it!
  • Decide when you will fit your workout into your day – no thinking you will workout “sometime” today – that does not work. I can pretty much guarantee 4,000 things will get in the way and keep you from actually doing the workout. Just plan it into your day and stick to it. I do my workout somewhere between 6 and 6:30am otherwise it does not get done.
  • Designate a place in your house as your workout space – think of it as your gym! It doesn’t have to be fancy but make it nice and functional.
  • Buy the equipment you need – Purchase a few dumbbells (light, medium, and heavy) a yoga mat, and maybe a few resistance bands to get started.
  • Find an accountability partner or online community for support – whether that’s finding a friend you can check in with, following a motivating fitness blogger or getting plugged into a private FB group. It helps knowing you’re not alone and that tribes of people are killing their fitness goals right at home too!
